Tour – Noble – Slime Mold: The Code That Cares
Dr. James Tour, synthetic chemist at Rice University:
"Molecules don't care about life. They never have. They never will."
He's right about the molecules. Tour spent decades proving that the building blocks of life can't self-assemble. Nobody has ever made even a dipeptide — two amino acids hooked together — under prebiotic conditions. Time is the enemy. Molecules fall apart faster than they form. "If you gave me all the parts of a cell in individual bottles — make a cell. Nobody would ever suggest that they could."
The molecules don't care. Chemistry is indifferent.
But the cell does.
Dr. Denis Noble, physiologist at Oxford, built the first computational model of a living heart cell in 1958. He spent 60 years inside the lab and discovered something the textbooks don't allow: the cell has knowledge that isn't in the DNA.
The cell proofreads its own genome — fixing 300,000 errors per replication before it will allow itself to divide. How does it know when it's done? "We don't know," Noble says. The cell refuses to divide until correction is complete. DNA can't copy itself without the cell being alive first. The genome is an organ of the cell, not the other way around.
"The body as a whole can tell the genome what to do." When you exercise, muscle cells send messengers to the nucleus telling the DNA to make more protein. Two-way causation. The "selfish gene" is a servant, not a master.
Noble: "Agency is fundamental to any living system." The immune system mutates on purpose during infection. Corn rearranges its own genome under stress. The central dogma — DNA → everything — has, in Noble's words, "the wrong metaphysics."
Two insiders. Two attacks on the materialist story. Tour from the beginning: the molecules can't self-assemble. Noble from the mechanism: the genome can't self-run. Life requires life. The chemistry doesn't work (Tour). The code can't execute without the cell already being alive (Noble).
Now look at what's growing in a Petri dish.
Take a piece of bark from a tree. Put it in a dish with some water. Leave it at room temperature. Within days, slime molds appear — organisms with no brain, no nervous system, no organs. A plasmodial slime mold is ONE cell — one membrane, one cytoplasm, thousands of nuclei sharing the same space. It crawls across the dish hunting bacteria. It navigates mazes. It remembers where it's been and avoids dead ends.
Break it into pieces and each piece continues to function. Cut it into many parts and they can find each other again and fuse — sharing cytoplasm, sharing memory. One organism can be cut into dozens of fragments and reassemble itself into a working whole.
When food runs out, the cellular slime mold does something extraordinary. Individual amoeba cells — separate, independent, each with its own membrane and nucleus — secrete a chemical signal (cyclic AMP). Other cells detect it and move toward the source. They aggregate. They form a slug. The slug moves toward light. It finds a good spot. The cells in the back undergo programmed cell death to become the stalk. The cells in the front become spores.
No cell has the plan. No cell sees the whole picture. Each cell just responds to local data — chemical concentrations, light gradients, physical contact. The complex behavior emerges from simple rules. IF food is gone AND cAMP is present, THEN move toward cAMP. IF I'm in the back of the slug, THEN die. IF I'm in the front, THEN become a spore.
That's not "just chemistry." Chemistry doesn't refuse to divide. Chemistry doesn't commit programmed cell death for the good of the structure. Chemistry doesn't navigate mazes.
Tour says the molecules don't care. Noble says the cell does. The slime mold shows you both — simultaneously. The molecules underneath the slime mold don't care. They're just proteins, lipids, nucleotides doing what chemistry does. But the cell they form DOES care. It hunts. It remembers. It sacrifices itself for the structure. It makes decisions based on data.
Where does the caring come from? Not from the molecules — Tour proved that. Not from the DNA — Noble proved that. The caring comes from the organization. From the code written into the system. From the IF/THEN rules that each cell executes — not because the molecules "want" to, but because the code tells them to.
But then we look at something different.
The slime mold's spores can survive 75 years dormant. Three-quarters of a century in a state of suspended animation, waiting for favorable conditions. When they arrive, the spore germinates and the cycle starts again. A single cell with no brain, no nervous system, no organs — executing a program that was written before it existed.
Tour: "I presume science will explain it someday."
Noble: "Agency doesn't come from anywhere — it's just what living things do."
Both men see the design. Both see the agency. Noble refuses to name the Designer. They're standing at the edge of the cliff, looking at the same evidence, saying "we don't know." And it is OK to say I don't know.
But a slime mold in a Petri dish knows what it needs to do. It just does it. No one told it. No one trained it. The code was there from the beginning.
Code requires a coder.
The molecules don't care (Tour). The cell does (Noble). The slime mold proves it — a single cell with no brain navigating mazes, remembering paths, sacrificing itself for the whole, and waiting 75 years for the right moment to start again.
Who wrote that code?
Genesis 1:26-28 — Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

We are a rebellious people, thinking we can go our own way. Turn unto the Lord while He may be found. He came to me in 2018 after I found out I had ALS. The peace that passes understanding will come with obedience to His word and will. Just lately, I have felt compelled to study the soil, microbes, and slime mold.
